FIUteach is focused on preparing highly effective secondary science and math teachers. Students who are part of the program will graduate with a bachelor's degree in their STEM major as well as a certificate to teach math or science at the secondary level (grades 6-12).
We partner with science and math teachers at MDCPS elementary, middle, K-8, and high schools who are interested in hosting our FIUteach students for field experience. Participating mentor teachers will be paid a stipend of $125 or $250 per student for each semester of participation depending on what class the student is enrolled in.
Mentor Teacher Qualifications:
- Teacher for grade 3-12
- Only math and science classes
- Willing to host a student for 1-2 observations and 3-5 teaching classes
- Clinical Education Certification is highly recommended
Important Constraints:
Please note, we cannot place students in:
- Pre-K, K, 1st, or 2nd-grade classes.
- Self-contained ESOL (Levels 1/2) or SPED classes.
- Inclusion classes with >50% SPED population.
- Classes shorter than 50 minutes.
- Classes not following MDCPS Pacing Guides.
- Classrooms where a full-time intern is already present
